This has gotten way too messy and way too complicated. lol So Shad is leveling and posting all there is to know about the Sickness in Cedar. Have a cat in Cedar? Cool! Have 2 or 3 or 7? *eyes Kiba* Great! This will help you figure out exactly what is going on in your clan and what your cat would or wouldn't know. All brought to you by your friendly (sort of) Medicine Cat, Ravenface!
Here we go!
Cedar Clan cats are falling sick and dying but the disease is not a mythical unicorn that is impossible to describe or has completely random symptoms. It is in fact based off of the Pneumonic Plague (click the link to learn more). These cats will all develop very similar symptoms. The disease, in the nutshell, destroys a cat's lungs. It starts with a mild cough, which progresses into a hacking cough with a light fever, and ends with severe chest congestion/pain, coughing up blood, and a strong fever. There can be small variations, but this is generally the path the disease will take. It also kills quickly. Cats will be sick for only about a week before kicking the bucket.
Week 1 - Firecloud becomes sick.
Week 2 - Mountainclaw and Spruceheart become sick. Firecloud dies.
Week 3 - Mountainclaw and Spruceheart flag. Spruce dies. Sandpaw, Brooksong, and Ravenmist have become sick.
Week 4 - Mountainclaw, Brooksong, and Sandpaw die. Ravenmist barely hangs on. Dawnkit becomes sick.
Week 5 - Ravenmist dies, but Dawnkit survives. <- Current Week!
NOTE: This week will mark the turning point in the disease. From here on, any cat that becomes sick will survive. If you want your cat to become sick for drama purposes, but not die, simply post saying such. :3
The Cedar Clan Medicine Cat has found a cure. She was too late to save Ravenmist, but Dawnkit (and any other cats that had fallen sick during Week 4) will pull through. Dawnkit will have experienced a very high fever though, destroying some of the vessels in her eyes, weakening them, and losing all of her night vision. Any cat that has been sick could very plausibly experience issues or have lasting disabilities that result from high fevers. These include a range of injuries like minor loss of sight to total blindness, mild loss of hearing to total deafness, nerve deadening (minor to extreme loss of the sensation of touch), and brain damage (again, mild to severe). If you ever wanted your cat to have any sort of disability, now would be the time to inflict it. They might not die, but they certainly do not have to get away scot free! It is not until the end of this week (or even later on in the next) that Starlingfur or Ravenface would make an announcement that the Sickness in Cedar had passed and Sharing Tongues could resume. Even then, cats will still be very likely to be jumpy and hesitant. If you have a cat in Cedar and they develop a cough any time in the next moon, they will probably think they are going to die. Cats will likely be split over the Medicine Cat's performance during the pandemic. Some will think she is terrible, having been unable to save so many cats and allowing so many to die. Others will likely think Ravenface is incredible, managing to end the raging disease that has terrified the clan for a month and a half now. They might even believe Star Clan is truly watching over Cedar Clan to have saved those they had all given up hope on. It is entirely up to you where your cat falls on this decision. The only universal feeling will be this: The Clan has had no less than 6 deaths. They were all perfectly healthy cats that got sick and died within a week, and cats are decidedly low on morale as Leafbare kicks into full swing.
Here we go!
The Sickness
Cedar Clan cats are falling sick and dying but the disease is not a mythical unicorn that is impossible to describe or has completely random symptoms. It is in fact based off of the Pneumonic Plague (click the link to learn more). These cats will all develop very similar symptoms. The disease, in the nutshell, destroys a cat's lungs. The Plot's Progression
I will detail this more below, but here are the basic points for quick reference.
Week 1 - Firecloud becomes sick.
Week 2 - Mountainclaw and Spruceheart become sick. Firecloud dies.
Week 3 - Mountainclaw and Spruceheart flag. Spruce dies. Sandpaw, Brooksong, and Ravenmist have become sick.
Week 4 - Mountainclaw, Brooksong, and Sandpaw die. Ravenmist barely hangs on. Dawnkit becomes sick.
Week 5 - Ravenmist dies, but Dawnkit survives. <- Current Week!
Week 1
Firecloud becomes sick.
It is nearing the end of Leaffall and no other cat is sick. No one is alarmed or worried, outside close family/friends, and even then worry would be minor. She only has a cough that is causing her some trouble sleeping. Nothing more. Ravenface does not alert Starlingfur and the clan is not warned as there is no perceived threat. Cats still come to the Medicine Den for minor aches or pains. Flickerkit, a current Med Den resident who is still unconscious 99% of the time, is not considered to be in any danger.Week 2
Mountainclaw and Spruceheart become sick. Firecloud dies.
Firecloud's sickness has progressed to having a fierce fever and is coughing up blood. Spruceheart has come in with a bad cough and, a day later, Mountainclaw does the same. Cats close to those who are sick might begin to talk and queens might be more protective of their kits but standard Warriors will be unaffected or unworried. Hacking coughs can now be heard from the Medicine Den at all hours of the day and Ravenface seems incredibly irritable, always busy. Firecloud does die, and an announcement would go out for all cats to see Ravenface immediately if they develop a cough, no matter how minor, but it is doubtful the stronger Warriors would take this seriously. Weaker Warriors might be concerned. The Medicine Cat decides kits are to be banned from the den to avoid their catching the sickness and considers if Flickerkit is unsafe in her den. She requests the kit be moved to the Elder's Den under watch, as she is still not stable enough to be left alone. Week 3
Mountainclaw and Spruceheart flag. Spruce dies. Sandpaw, Brooksong, and Ravenmist have become sick.
NOW the clan will full of whispers and worry. As Leafbare comes baring down on them, only the most foolhardy Warrior might still be in denial but most cats will be on edge and know about the sickness. Spruceheart is dead and most would suspect the others to soon be dying as well. Ravenface's abilities as a Medicine Cat might be called into question by some of the more cynical cats. Queens would keep kits close and almost all cats would avoid the Medicine Den which echoes with moans and coughs and reeks from the smell of sickness and blood. There are simply too many cats sick or dying to keep it clean. Any cats that attempt to help would be chased off by Raveface to avoid their getting sick as well. Ravenface has banned any cat, kit, apprentice, and Warrior alike, from entering her den or having any sort of contact with the sick cats unless absolutely necessary. It is likely she would fight Starlingfur to keep the dead cats' bodies from being given a proper mourning in the center of camp so as to avoid the risk of spreading the disease further. Flickerkit is moved to the Elder's Den and watched over by Birchtail.Week 4
Mountainclaw, Brooksong, and Sandpaw die. Ravenmist barely hangs on. Dawnkit becomes sick.
The whole clan is fully aware of the disease now and, finally Ravenface is able to deduce the method of the disease spreading. It has been spread through Sharing Tongues and each cat is warned against this, at least until the pandemic is over, effectively stopping the disease from spreading any further. They are too late though as Dawnkit has become sick as well. Flickerkit has had an episode and must be moved back to the Medicine Den, unfortunately. The Clan Medicine Cat is haggard and strained, and every cat can see it. Some might wonder if Star Clan has abandoned them. Some might claim a rogue is unfit to be a Medicine Cat. Most will likely be praying to help... a lot.NOTE: This week will mark the turning point in the disease. From here on, any cat that becomes sick will survive. If you want your cat to become sick for drama purposes, but not die, simply post saying such. :3
