I may have the face of an angel But I sure as hell don't act like one "Gonna visit Papa! Gonna visit Papa!"
"He's sick though, so you've got to be careful!"
"Blehh! Papa's strong! I don't gotta be careful never!"
Pantherkit stuck out her tongue, before resuming her singsong chirping. She skipped through camp, tumbling and pouncing on every leaf that dared get in her way. Turtlefrost grinned after her, shaking her head. Such an exciteable young kit. She had the biggest blue eyes she'd ever seen. Well- other than her own, obviously. And Pantherkit's were just filled to the brim with excitement. What kit wouldn't be, going to visit their father? The leader of their clan? If Turtlefrost's father was leader, you could bet your tail that she'd have been just as excited.
Still, this wasn't really a friendly visit. Nor were they going to see Duskblaze specifically. They were actually going to find Eveningblaze. Or well, Turtlefrost and Wolfkit were. Turtlefrost looked down to her side, making sure the gray tabby was still there. So light and gentle, sometimes he seemed almost invisible! But there he was, pressed up against her fur with a lowered head and a sniffly nose. His breath came in wheezes, and he sneezed every few seconds. Poor kit. He'd been like this for a day or two. Turtlefrost had watched on her visits to Fogkit. After all, it was important for any good warrior to keep tabs on the future generation's progress! And what do you know, he hadn't been showing signs of getting any better.
Petal had asked her to take him to Eveningblaze, today. And seeing as she'd just gotten off her Dawn Patrol, it wasn't as though Turtlefrost had had anything better to do. Well, she could have gone hunting.. or worked on patching the camp.. But who could blame a she-cat for wanting to take any excuse possible to go see her cousin? Eveningblaze had been just so busy lately. Always brushing her off, never wanting to talk. Not that he was the most chatty person in the first place, but still! And maybe if she brought him a patient, he'd actually let her stay in the den for more than five seconds.
Now of course, as soon as Turtlefrost had agreed to Petal's request, Pantherkit had jumped right up. As far as Turtlefrost knew, they'd never been to the medicine cat's den. But Pantherkit seemed to associate Eveningblaze with Duskblaze- (was it the similar names, or the fact that every time Duskblaze left the medicine cat's den Eveningblaze hovered over him like a mother hawk?)- and had demanded that she come along. And how could Turtlefrost turn down such a cute, excited little face!
Pantherkit crashed loudly through the little stream in front of the medicine cat's den, bolting straight into the entrance with glee. With Wolfkit however, Turtlefrost had to be a bit more careful. He started to walk through, but Turtlefrost picked him up quick as a whip. Nuh-uh! If he was sick, they didn't want him getting any worse! Instead, Turtlefrost carried him and leapt gracefully over the stream- before entering the Medicine Cat's den about as abrasively as Pantherkit.
"PAPA!" the kit squealed, tumbling over to her father and worming his way under his leg. Turtlefrost grinned, setting down Wolfkit. The little tom gave a much more reserved smile, but happiness glowed in his eyes all the same.
"Hi Papa!" he purred, but his voice was a wheeze. It had looked like he was about to say more, but he was cut off by a few racking coughs.
Turtlefrost frowned as she looked around the den. Where was Eveningblaze? There were plenty of sick cats sleeping, but not a healer in sight. Eventually, she looked back to Duskblaze with a grin. Yep, his wound was still pretty bad. Blood was bleeding through the cobwebs, but Pantherkit obviously didn't seem to care as she vigorously rolled around. "Hey Duskblaze." she meowed respectfully. Well, as respectfully as a 'hey' could be. He was still her leader, after all! "Wolfkit has a cough, and Pantherkit just wanted to come visit. Do you know where Eveningblaze is?" She looked around again. Still no Eveningblaze!

Duskblaze had been dozing, half way between being awake and being asleep. But as soon as he heard the small splashes of tiny paws in the stream outside, he was awake. He looked towards the entrance of the den as soon as Pantherkit came running in. A purr left his chest as he smiled as best as he could. He pulled his daughter close and licked her head a few times.
He then looked up as he heard Wolfkit. His ears perked with concern. He was wheezing and then he was coughing. He had already lost his mate. He didn't want to lose one of his own kits. His green eyes were laced with concern as he examined the small gray tabby's body. It shook every time he coughed and it didn't look as if he had been getting much sleep. He looked absolutely exhausted.
"I think he went out to gather herbs, Turtlefrost. Wolfkit, come here. You can come over and see me too," he said. And suddenly, another tiny body came crashing in. Stormkit came crashing in, fur fluffed up as she stared at everyone.
"You all left me!" she squeaked as she ran over to Duskblaze and buried her face into his chest. She let out a loud purr as she rolled around with Pantherkit, cuddling up to her father as best as she could.

I may have the face of an angel But I sure as hell don't act like one Herbs, huh? Turtlefrost frowned, letting out a tsk. Well, he had been pretty busy lately... So this shouldn't have come as exactly a surprise. It wasn't like herbs grew on trees! Well... some of them did. But the point was there! He could have at least asked someone to help, though. "Oh well. I suppose I can just wait here until he gets back!" Turtlefrost shrugged, plopping her tail right down beside the entrance. She didn't have another patrol until Dusk. She might be assigned the random hunting patrol or two throughout the afternoon, but she would be free for the most part! And while the she-cat liked to keep busy, there was a part of her who was the slightest bit worried about what Eveningblaze would do to her if he came back to a destroyed den, only to find out that she had been the one to let a couple of kits run rampant in it.
"Besides.. I'd rather not have Eveningblaze skin me for letting a couple of kits trample whatever leaves he still has left." she gave Duskblaze a wink.
"I won't tramble nofin!" Wolfkit protested, standing on his tip toes before tumbling back down with a cough. Yeah, if he kept on tumbling like that? Turtlefrost wasn't so sure. The she-cat smirked, and after a moment Wolfkit nodded to his father, bounding over with a smile and crawling between the tom's two paws. He rested one head on his father's leg, a contented smile on his face as he nuzzled in. Such a sweetheart, Turtlefrost couldn't help but give a smile that was a bit dopey. She quickly wiped it off though. It was just.. because these kits were the future of their clan! And they were cute! And friends with Fogkit! It wasn't like she wanted kits of her own or anything. No... she was too busy for all of that. A warrior's life for her!
A squeak from the den's entrance gave her an excuse to look over, and as if on cue a little calico came jumping into the den. Paws sopping, Stormkit dashed for her father, trampling Wolfkit in the process as she scrabbled to share Pantherkit's place beneath their father's chest. Wolfkit squeaked, and Pantherkit purred in delight before wrapping her paws around her sister.
"You's sleepin, Stormkit!" Pantherkit explained, pressing further back into her father's fur. At this point she was barely visible. "Never leave for real!"
Alright, Turtlefrost couldn't help the lopsided grin now. They were just such cute kits! Good, loyal, sweet young cats. They would grow into fine warriors no doubt. Wait.. What was this? Was she... starting to get attached to this clan? After two moons living here? Okay, that was a weird feeling. Maybe it was just... Seeing clanborn kits again. And watching cats start to grow up with the code in their hearts, rather than savagery brought on by the war. It was seeing recovery.
Although... Turtlefrost didn't know how much a couple of two moon old kits scrabbling beneath the jaws of a tom who had just lost his cheek would do for his recovery.
"Easy, you two!" she laughed. "What a pawful, huh?" she looked at Duskblaze now, shaking her head.Yeah, whenever they got all trouble-making like? That trampled down every maternal bone in her body. Of which there were like, -1 in the first place. "Seriously. I don't know how Petal does it."

Duskblaze nuzzled the three kits that had come to see him., using the good half of his face. His ears flicked as he heard Turtlefrost. He purred a bit, an odd noise for the fierce-hearted tom. Well, he didn't even look like the cat everyone thought him to be. For once, he looked relaxed. He looked....happy.
"Petal sure is...something. She's a good cat at heart, if not a little odd."
He looked up at Turtlefrost again, green eyes filled with happiness as he rested with his tiny family. He examined her for a moment and he shook his head.
"Eveningblaze has been a pain in my tail since I received this wound. It's actually quite nice to have him out for once. I don't know what you see in him. I can tell you're always happy when you come in here to visit. I just don't understand why," he meowed.
------
Stormkit purred and wrapped her paws around her sister too. She nuzzled up into her father's chest. "Petal can handle us because she's our mama! Mamas know how to handle kits!"

I may have the face of an angel But I sure as hell don't act like one Even leaders needed time to relax sometimes. And recovery was the best time to do that. Why, Turtlefrost could just remember how her uncle Hailstar was with his kits. Man... Things were just getting more and more familiar. Turtlefrost didn't know what to think about that, honestly. She did know that she agreed about Petal being an odd one though! Turtlefrost laughed. "Yeah, she's... Interesting." Always on about her tests and whatnot. It reminded Turtlefrost of Aurorasong. Oh, how did Eveningblaze think of her then, she wondered? It almost made her laugh again, but instead she just shook herh head. "The kits seem to like her though, and she does a good job handling all these little rascals!" Seriously. There were so many kits in the nursery right now, and only one queen. Again, Turtlefrost just had no idea how the she-cat did it.
Ohhh Eveningblaze. Turtlefrost laughed again, a wily grin on her face. "That sounds like him. But he's family, you know?" her grin softened, ever so slightly. "He might be a royal biiiiiiii-" Kits! Kits in the room! "-rch tree! Sometimes," she quickly corrected herself with a half sheepish, half cheeky grin, "But its important for us to hold on to what we have left." Yeah... What they had left. Turtlefrost's eyes darkened for half a moment. Her older brother, Darkclaw... Her siblings of the same litter, Poppykit and Yarrowkit.. Her mother Foxflower.. And all her numerous cousins. Her mentor. Her friends. Her clan. All of them were gone now. Eveningblaze was blunt and angry and more than a little irrational at times. But he.. was all she really had left, wasn't he? Hahaha. Haha. Ha.
It... was best not to think of things like that.
But this was Marshclan. And even if it would never be as good as Thornclan.. it was something. And there were kits that would be growing up by the code here. Wait a second- did Stormkit say mama? Turtlefrost blinked, looking from the kits to Duskblaze. Had... Nobody told them? Uhh.. Huh. Turtlefrost quirked a brow at her leader. Keeping secrets from kits, no matter how young.. That wasn't something that Turtlefrost exactly liked. And she was surprised, frankly, that a cat like Duskblaze would do something like that. Kits are cats- they needed to know things. Starclan had Turtlefrost wished that someone had told her the truth about her father when she'd been younger. But history just had a habit of repeating itself, didn't it? Something akin to annoyance flashed through her eye- though not vibrant enough for a kit's catching. "Mamas certainly do know how to handle kits." she agreed, somewhat commentally. The look that she gave Duskblaze was a curious one- but even she knew better than to bring something like this up right now. And she wouldn't disrespect her leader. Or maybe he'd just not gotten the chance to yet..?

Duskbalze looked at Stormkit with curious eyes. He gave a small, nervous chuckle as he saw Turtlefrost's look. He then cleared his throat for a moment. "Now.. who said that Petal was your mother, Stormkit?" he asked, green eyes worried now. Had Petal told them something that wasn't true? Had she told them that?
"Well, no one. I mean, there aren't any other queens in the clan, are there, Dad? It's obvious that she's our mother. Every kit has a mother and father, right?"
Duskblaze gave the tiny she-kit a worried look as he cleared his throat again. He sat up for a moment, causing Stormkit to look up at him with curious eyes as he stopped cuddling with all the kits.
"We should talk about that, actually. Petal isn't your mother. She has taken care of you since you were born, but she isn't your birth mother. She is doing a fine job at being a motherly figure to you all. She just wasn't the one that carried you."
Wow, this was awkward. He waited to see how everyone would react.
Stormkit looked shocked and horrified. Petal wasn't their mother?! Well, that's not possible! Where was their mother then?

Pantherkit & WolfkitPantherkit cocked her head, moving from her place burrowed beneath her father's chest just a smidge. "Course she's our Mama. Who else could be? No other cats sleepin in the nursery cept for other kits....." Pantherkit looked at Turtlefrost, then, something curious in her eye. She pulled out further from beneath her father's chest. "Turtafros looks lots like me an Stormkit, but she don't live in the nursery! Is Turtafros our Mama?" Pantherkit stared at Turtlefrost, blue eyes curious but judging. She did lotsa Mama stuff. Like takin Wolfkit to get his cough fixed, an playin with Fogkit. But she aint never slep in the Nursery, an couldn't feed them like Petalfrost. Her name was frost though- was that what Mamas got? Maybe Papa was just joking.
"No, no no no no." Turtlefrost laughed, backing away and shaking her head. There was a slightly panicky look in her eye as she looked from Duskblaze to the kits, and she showed just a bit too many teeth in that nervous smile. "I'm not anybody's Mama. I'm just a warrior, alright?" Hmm. Pantherkit frowned.
"If she ain't though.. Who is? I don't want that ugly one with no fur to be our Mama." Pantherkit wrinkled her nose. She was gross and scary, but not the cool scary like bears an foxes. "The gray one looks kinda like Wolfkit..." Wolfkit perked his ears, rolling onto his back with a cough before looking at their father with inquisitive eyes. Though all of their eyes still shared the same color, he was a stark contrast from all of his siblings in every respect. "Bu she jus got here! Right? An there aint no other Mama cats in the clan!" Pantherkit frowned. The idea that Petalfrost wasn't their Mama was just... Silly! It didn't make no sense!
If Pantherkit had been paying attention to Turtlefrost, she would have seen the she-cat shift her weight to one side, quirking her muzzle in a look of discomfort. But she wasn't paying attention to her. She was just looking at her Papa and her siblings. Wolfkit broke out in another coughing fit, and Pantherkit glared. This was important! He needed to shut up. Looking back at their father, Pantherkit frowned. "That... don't make sense! Petalfrost gots to be our Mama!" She protested, a horrified look on her face that mirrored her sister's. Wolfkit just blinked, jaw slack. What...?
"Carried us...? She carries us lotsa places though! Out of the den and all around an into our nests when its dark out!" Wolfkit was absolutely confused, and it showed clearly on the kit's face.

Duskblaze's fur heated up from embarrassment.
"N-no! Turtlefrost is definitely not your mother. And I promise that Petalfrost isn't your mother either. Umm... I guess you all are old enough for me to tell you. And it's a different type of carrying, Wolfkit."
He laid back down and got comfortable. He pulled all three of his kits closer and looked at them in the face one at a time. They were all so beautiful. All so young and innocent. Hopefully hearing this won't make too big of an impact on their young lives.
He took a deep breath before releasing it.
"Your mother was a brave she-cat, although she could be a bit on the grumpy side. She had black fur and yellow eyes, she was very pretty and strong. She was a warrior, just like I use to be. And she took care of the clan very well. Her name was Scorpionstorm. Then we found out she was carrying you all. So she moved to the nursery."
"Within a few moons, you all were being kitted. It was a complicated time. Petalfrost had just joined the clan and had Robinkit only a few days before. Your mother was having a rough time and was losing a lot of blood. Eveningblaze was trying to save you all and her, but we had to move you all. So I picked you all up one by one, you all were so tiny back then, and moved you to Petalfrost."
"Scorpionstorm.... she didn't like that very much. She tried to get to you all, but it wasn't safe. So I held her down. As I did, she gave me the wound on my face. Ripped my cheek right open. But I couldn't just leave. So I continued to help as best as I could. Within a few seconds... she was dead. Believe me when I say this to you all, she loved you with all of her heart and wanted you to be with her. She even picked out your names several days before she had you."
"I try to be a good father for you all. I'm trying to do right by her. I want you all to grow up safe and loved. It's hard for me to do when I'm stuck in here or doing my leaderly duties, though. Just know I became leader of this clan so that you all could be safe. So that everyone here could be safe. I hope you all understand that I can't always be around as much as Petalfrost or Turtlefrost."
He stopped talking and looked down at his kits. He waited for their reactions. He could see Stormkit just staring at him, eyes wide. He had made sure not to tell them how she had died.

Pantherkit & WolfkitPantherkit curled back up beneath her father when she was pulled, even if she was as antsy as... She didn't know a lot of metaphors yet. As antsy as something that was really antsy. Like an ant. Either way, she was fidgety and wiggly as could be as her father pulled the three of them close, and stepped on Wolfkit's paws more than a few times, much to the tom's coughing displeasure. All three of the kits watched their father with anticipation and big eyes. And then, he spoke.
A black she-cat with yellow eyes. Beautiful and strong, and a good warrior. Scorpionstorm. What a powerful, beautiful name. What a warrior. Pantherkit could hardly sit still. Why wasn't she here any more? Would she be coming to see them? Pantherkit wanted to meet her! Her fur was almost black- what if she got yellow eyes when she got big and looked like her? Oh, she sounded so different from Petal.. Why couldn't she be here now?
Robinkit.. wasn't their brother? Pantherkit blinked. She had never thought... Oh. Wow. And.. Losing blood? Why would she be losing blood? Where would it go?! Pantherkit furrowed her brow. Beside her, she could see little tears forming in her brother's baby blue eyes. There was only dismay and horror in her own. What happened to her? What happened to their real mama? Pantherkit shook her head, ears lying flat.
"Whats... Whats dead?" Wolfkit squeaked, tiny tail curling beneath him. Pantherkit just growled, closing her eyes and shaking her head.
"Who took her away? Who made her dead? I wanna meet her! Bring her back, Papa!" she cried, shoving her tiny paws against her father's chest. If she loved them, why did she go away? Duskblaze was leader! He could do anything! He could bring their Mama back, right? Wherever dead was!
"I should.. probably go." Turtlefrost meowed quickly, excusing herself from the den and shooting off quicker than quick right out of that situation. Pantherkit barely even noticed.

Duskblaze watched as Turtlefrost left. He was hoping she would stay for support, but it was too late now. He wasn't about to call her back in here. So he just looked back at his kits.
"I can't bring her back, Pantherkit. Death is permanent. Nobody can bring back the dead. She's with Starclan now. It had been her time to go. She's out of pain and is safe up there. Its okay, she's fine. We're all fine. I can't tell you who took her away. You all don't need to know that information. I want you all to love everyone in this clan like they are family. And if I told you... I just can't. Please understand that its for the best."
"You have to tell us!" Stormkit squeaked, hitting her paws against Duskblaze's front legs. "Bring her back! Bring her back!" she wailed.
Duskblaze was going to cry. He was fairly sure he was going to cry. No. He would cry about it later. He hated seeing his kits like this. They were so young. They didn't understand. They would soon, though. Especially if these sick cats didn't make it. They would really know what death was.

Pantherkit & WolfkitWolfkit's lip trembled and his ears fell flat against his head. He tucked his paws under his body, and suddenly he felt very small. He didn't know what dead was. Was it somewhere they could go? Why couldn't... Why couldn't their... Real Mama come back? Why wasn't Petaa their real mama? Wolfkit liked Petaa. She said funny things and took care of them when they had bad dreams- why couldn't she have been their real Mama in the first place? And what was dead?!
"Whats Starclan?"
"I don care who they are, make em give her back! You're leader, you can do anything!"
Beside him, Wolfkit's eldest sister was growing more and more upset. She shoved against her father, rallying with Stormkit. She was trying to hide the little tears that were prickling in the corners of her eyes- Wolfkit could see it. But she bore her little fangs in anger and shook her head, trying not to show it. Wolfkit looked quietly from his father to his sisters. He opened his mouth- but stopped as a coughing fit overtook him. He crouched low, breathing hard. But he couldn't get enough air. Tears pricked at the corner of his eyes now as he wheezed, leaning against his father's leg for support.
"Did they kitnap her? I'll fight them if they won't let us meet her! I'll fight all of em, an I'll save her an bring her back!" Pantherkit growled, gritting her teeth and digging her little claws into the soft moss of her father's nest. She didn't care who they were. There was more clans than Cedarclan she guessed, but why wasn't their Papa doing anything about it? What did pernant mean? Where did this dumb Starclan live? She would march right up to their camp an make them give her Mama back!

Duskblaze looked up at the roof of the medicine cat den. Starclan help him. Please. He took a deep breath and then looked back at his kits carefully. He licked Wolfkit a few times. "Shhh now. All of you. Your mother just can't come back. No matter what. I can't bring her back. You can't bring her back. We cannot escape death. We cannot go their now. Once we go, then we can never come back. Our place is here."
He sighed again before getting up. He picked up Wolfkit by the scruff and carried him outside of the den. He could hear Pantherkit and Stormkit's tiny paws following quickly after him. Once he was outside, he looked up at the sky. The stars were slowly disappearing as the sun was rising. He set Wolfkit down in between his front paws and sat down as well. He pulled Pantherkit and Stormkit over towards their brother so that all three kits were between his front paws.
"Look up, my kits. Do you see the glowing in the sky? That is the silverpelt. It is Starclan's home and territory. Each one of those dots are warriors. Dead and gone from this world and onto the next. They live in Starclan above us and watch over us from their perch. When they deem fit, they come and guide us. Our family, our friends, even our enemies are up there. Watching and waiting for us to be able to join them. They know that we can't join them now. One day, though. One day, we'll be about to see your mother again. But for now, you must be patient and strong. They wish for you to prove yourselves. To show them that you are strong warriors who are willing to serve and protect this clan no matter what. And when they deem its your time, then they will come to fetch you."
"I will be the one to come and fetch you. Myself and your mother will be the ones to get you when that time comes. By then, someone else will have become leader and I will be in Starclan with your mother. By then, you all will have had families of your own and will have been strong warriors. It will be a long time before you can meet your birth mother. But I promise, the wait will be worth it. Until then, you must be the strongest and bravest warriors in the clan. Can you do that for me? Can you do that for your mother?"
He looked down at them carefully.
Stormkit was silent, looking at the stars above them. Her eyes were wide and tears streamed down her small face. She didn't understand. But this was the only way to see mama, right? The only way. Why was it the only way?

Silence.
Silence.
Silence.
All was quiet, save for the harsh wheeze of Wolfkit's breath. All three kits watched the sky. Two she-cats, one tom, and their father. A family. A family with a hole. Once so small and invisible, once noted it spread. Like the tearing of moss. Like pale light spilling through the dark sky with the rising sun. It was funny, almost. How you didn't even realize that something was gone until you were told. And once you knew, the wound was so gaping that you never understood how you could have missed it. It did more than sting. It burned. Worse than any pricked paw or trampled tail. Worse than being told to go to bed with no supper, and worse than being scolded or left out of a game. It was worse than anything that Pantherkit had ever felt. And it was too much for a cat so young to put into words. For a cat so young to even understand.
Above, the stars were cold. They would never know her. Scorpionstorm. Scorpionstorm. Such a strong, intimidating name. Nothing like Petalfrost or Turtlefrost, or Owlfur or Littleflame. It was strong. It was brave. It was something that Pantherkit would never know.. No... Some one. Her Mama. Her real Mama. Their real mama. With dark fur like hers, and yellow eyes. Did they look like the sun, or the flowers that Cherrykit hid in his nest? Pantherkit would never know, because Papa couldn't bring her back. She thought that her Papa could do anything. Because he was their Papa, and he was Marshclan's leader. Why... why? Why couldn't he bring her back? Why did death have to last- why would they all die some day? Pantherkit liked Marshclan. She liked her friends and she liked her clanmates. She didn't want to join another clan. She didn't want to be with enemies, or dumb cats who she didn't even know. She didn't want to leave her camp and go up there. Her camp was warm. Her nest was safe. Silverpelt... Looked so cold. So big. So scary.
Why was she expected to go up there?
Why did they take cats away? Why were they gonna take Papa, just like they took Scorpionstorm? And then Wolfkit and Stormkit, and Adderkit and her? She didn't want to be watched. She didn't want those cold, unfeeling little lights looking at her. Judging her. Prove herself? Why should she have to prove herself to go somewhere like that, where all cats were the same? Why did they have to prove that they would protect Marshclan, only to go join some other clan so far away? No. Pantherkit shook her head, biting her lip as her eyes grew glossy. She didn't want to be taken away. She wanted to stay here. She wanted everyone to stay here. She would be strong, and loyal, and the best warrior that Marshclan had ever seen. The best leader that Marshclan had ever seen. But she wouldn't go up there. Not to a place that took cats where they didn't want to go. Not to the place that had taken her Mama away, even when Papa had said that she'd loved them so much. If she loved them, she wouldn't have wanted to go. She couldn't have. And now, she wouldn't even see her until they were all grown. Why would they do something like that? It wasn't... It wasn't right. It wasn't good. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair, it wasn't fair, it wasn't fair.Pantherkit watched. She watched the stars fade from the sky, and she watched the light rise. It wiped them away. Clean. Like crumbs from a nest. Thats all they were. They weren't good or strong, like the cats in camp. The took cats away, but were too coward to stay out in the sun. Too coward to stay above when all good cats were awake. When they could be judged. Pantherkit decided something, then. As the cogs in her mind turned and the stars faded from the sky. The warmth of her siblings beside her, the protective shelter of her father above her. This was good. This was nice. But someday, Starclan would take it all away. When she spoke, it was in a voice softer than she'd ever used.
"I hate Starclan."

Duskblaze looked down at Pantherkit. He sighed and shook his head. He knew that she didn't understand completely. He should have waited to tell them. He should have waited until they knew more about the clan and about the code. They were too young to have heard all of this. He should have waited. But it was too late now.
"Me too."
He licked the top of his daugthers' heads. "You two just don't understand. You don't know yet. Starclan is not our enemy."
He didn't know how to explain this to them. Not without hurting them more or accidentally making them hate Starclan more. He wasn't sure what to do. Should he tell them why their mother had died and risk them hating their brother and Littleflame? Or should he just let them hate Starclan? Why did he have to make this choice? He didn't think he could make the choice.

WolfkitWolfkit didn't know what to think. He was cold. His chest hurt. He couldn't get enough air- why couldn't he get enough air?! He could barely focus on what his fathers said. On what his sisters said. His heart hurt, too. Wolfkit had no idea what to make of any of this, and he felt lightheaded. The little tom crouched, burying his head in his paws. They had a Mama, but she wasn't here. And the Mama that had been taking care of them wasn't their real Mama, and Robinkit wasn't his brother. And there was this place called Starclan in the sky where good, brave cats got to go. Like their real Mama. It was so confusing. The world swam.
Hazy. He hadn't realized how hazy everything had gotten until he heard heavy pawsteps approaching. Wolfkit looked up. A black cat. Or was it... two? No- That was Eveningblaze. Wolfkit blinked. Oh right. He was supposed to be coming here to see Eveningblaze. They talked so much about Mamas, that he'd almost forgot. Wolfkit blinked at the medicine cat, and.... Then lowered his head again. He was getting so tired. He heard cats talking, but couldn't understand them. And then, a paw at his back. Baby blue eyes fluttered back into focus- and now he heard what they were saying.
"-Ill. Shouldn't be- Wrong with- Back- Nursery-" he could only catch bits and pieces. His father spoke. Eveningblaze spoke. His sisters spoke. And then, Eveningblaze was picking him up. Wolfkit wiggled a bit in protest, but not very strongly. This made it even harder to breathe. Eveningblaze was taking him back to the nursery. He saw Pantherkit, running across camp, Stormkit hot on her heels. He saw Papa looking after them, but not following. He looked sad. And then, the green of the Medicine cat's den. His father following. Eveningblaze rummaging through herbs. And then, sleep.
