Birchtail sat beside the warrior's den. He looked over as Starlingfur was speaking to Bramblenose about something. No doubt about the skinning idea. She was probably trying to figure out as much as she could. And he could see Bramblenose being rather patient with it. He had to give Bramblenose that much. The other brown tom seemed patient with cats who had his respect. And rather impatient to those who he thinks could harm anyone here. And in return, Birchtail can respect that.
He smiled brightly as he watched her from where he sat. She could only imagine what she was saying to him. What kind of voice she was saying it in? Was it stern? Curious? Excited? Oh she had such a beautiful voice. He could listen to her talk all the time. She didn't talk often. She was a quiet cat. But he loved her anyways. He cherished her words, even if they were getting onto him for playing so much. And every time, he would just smile and would turn to her and give her a giant, goofy smile.
And those eyes of hers. Oh, those eyes! They were so pretty! He often got lost in them while talking to Starlingfur. So much that he would have to get her to repeat what she said because he would be so mesmerized by them. She probably hated that, but he couldn't help it. They were just unlike any eyes he'd ever seen. At least, in his opinion.
He just stared at her now, unable to take his eyes off of her beautiful form. He wasn't even paying much attention to what was going on around him, but the rustling of the warriors den made him jump in shock. He glanced over to see who was coming out.

It’s okay to get lost every once in a while.
Sometimes getting lost is how we find ourselves.
Boy oh boy was it a nice night. Crisp air in his fur, the smell of leaves on the wind, the noisy rustle of camp life.. It was just great! Days like this made Specklefoot think about how much he loved life in Cedarclan. As if he didn't love it all the time anyways! The patrols, the dens, how many friends he'd already made... And the fact that he had an apprentice now! It was all so great, it made his head spin! Six moons ago, Specklefoot would have never guessed that he could have this kind of life. And yet here he was now. Leaf-Fall, a warrior of Cedarclan. How great life was.
He'd just gotten back from a patrol on Marshclan's border. Things were quieting down around there just about now. He hoped that Starlingfur's talk with Duskblaze had cleared things up! And with Ravenface bein gas awfully smart as she was, the sickness would probably get cleared up in no time too. Why, with how often they went out to pick plants, it had to be! Yep, Cedarclan life sure was good.
Now that he was off his border patrol, he had a good while to himself. He was going to be on the midnight patrol on the Stone Peaks, but that was a ways off yet. And he was planning on training with Dapplepaw before Dawn! Oh, he was just so excited to have an apprentice of his own. He would even be double training with Bramblenose and Mistlepaw! He just couldn't wait. But for now, Bramblenose was out. And Dapplepaw was talking to Rosepaw. So heeeee... would find something else to do! Someone else to talk to! Specklefoot scanned the clearing. Hmmm... Heavyclaw and Cavernstorm were talking over there... Swanstrike was saying something to Rookshadow that way.. Oh! Birchtail! He didn't look like he was talking to anyone! A grin sprung to Specklefoot's face and he broke into a trot, taking only a moment to reach the pudgy tom's side before plopping down.
"Evenin Birchtail!" he chirped, looking around camp. "What're ya up to?" he followed the older tom's gaze. Ohhhhhhh! Specklefoot's smile grew wider. Starlingfur. Oh, she was just so pretty. With her flyaway hairs and those sleepy copper eyes. She was talking to Bramblenose about something. Busy as always! Such a good leader. "Watchin Starlinfur?" he commented, looking to the shorter tom with a grin.

Birchtail gave Specklefoot a smile and nodded. "Yeah! Its just hard for me to take my eyes off of her is all," he said, sitting back down. He wrapped his tail around his paws, turning towards the younger tom slightly so that they could chat, if Specklefoot even wanted to.
His green eyes looked over the tom. there was so much energy and potential in him. He still had a bit to learn about being a warrior, but he was a good cat overall. He was protective and helpful. He wanted to learn and wanted to prove himself. And Starlingfur had given him the chance! Right after Birchtail was given Poolkit, Specklefoot was given an apprentice too. One of the newer cats named Dapplepaw.
He looked back towards Starlingfur, though. He watched her movements and he began to wonder if he could catch her attention from all the way over here. Maybe he could do something goofy. Make her laugh. She hadn't laughed in a while. She could use a good laugh. Plus, he wanted to hear her laughing again.

Oh, he sure was! Specklefoot's eyes sparkled. "Oh, if I had a mate like Starlingfur, I wouldn't be able to either." he purred, swishing his tail happily. She was so kind.. Serious, but gentle.. She wanted what was best for everyone, not just a few cats. Specklefoot hadn't met many cats who he'd been able to read in his lifetime. It was usually pretty hard for him to understand what cats were thinking. But her pretty sun-colored eyes were just like windows. It made Specklefoot feel safe in this clan.
"I used to have one. My Embry. Or... I think I was hers." he tilted his head. "But she got real mad and left. That was before I came to Cedarclan." he twitched his whiskers, expression becoming something more forlorn. Embry, with her red fur like autumn leaves and sunset eyes just the same. She'd called him a lost cause. A waste of time. The words still.. Specklefoot tried not to think about them often, but sometimes whenever Ravenface or one of his fellow warriors scolded him, he felt that same ache in his heart. Like when your fur is soaked from rain, and it feels heavy even to walk. Like he wasn't good enough. Like he'd never be good enough, and everyone knew it but him. Specklefoot didn't notice often. He always tried to see the best. And usually.. it was the best! But sometimes that little ache came back. But... most of his clanmates never made him feel like that! And he was sure it was an accident when they did! And most of all, Starlingfur never did.
She was just so kind. She helped him with hunting, and was real patient when he wasn't doin it right. She didn't get mad like Embry or Dusty had. That made Specklefoot.. happy. And he was sure by how Birchtail looked at her, she made him real happy too.

Birchtail's whiskers twitched as he listened to Specklefoot. He glanced at the younger tom and purred. "You'll find a good mate one day. One who won't leave even if she's mad. You just have to be patient," he explained, turning to look back at Starlingfur again.
Patience. Birchtail had always wanted a mate. Someone he could love and cherish, just like how he saw his parents love one another. He wanted something like that. And it had taken a long time to find. He had found it in the most unexpected place too. A quiet she-cat, older than he was. One whom had been through so much and yet still pushed through everything. A she-cat who had been hurt by her first love.
Boltfang.
Birchtail didn't like the cat. Not because he had been with Starlingfur. Because he wasn't a good cat. He had hurt so many and didn't seem to care. He couldn't tell what his sister saw in the black and white tom. He didn't even visit his kits. Nor did he care about the ones he had with Starlingfur, although they weren't around anymore. Birchtail couldn't respect a cat like that. One where he knows a she-cat worships him as their King and yet treats them like they aren't worth his time.
He had not only done that to Fernheart. But to Starlingfur as well.
Birchtail looked at his mate now. She hadn't deserved it. Which is why he figured he was the only one for her. The only one that could take care of her and make her happy. He wanted to do that for her. And he did his best to do so.
"I would do so much for Starlingfur. That's how you know when you're in love. You would risk your life for the other cat without a second thought."

Specklefoot smiled. He... hadn't really thought of getting another mate. Not since Embry. Her memory was still fresh in his mind. Sometimes, when he woke up in the warriors den with that warmth all around him, he still felt like he was in one of their little nests. Boy did Specklefoot miss Embry. Boy did he miss her. Specklefoot laughed a little bit- although it wasn't quite as chipper as his usual giggles. "Well, I don't know about that. Embry was.. well, oh I don't know." he laughed again, shaking his head. "She was special." she always helped him. Always tried to, even when.. she made him feel like he couldn't be helped. She was there when his family left, and now she was gone. Sometimes he wondered why everyone left. Sometimes Embry's words echoed in his mind, and he felt like he knew. But.. he had Cedarclan now. And he would find purpose here.
"I loved her, I think." Specklefoot paused. "Woulda walked t' the enda the mountains just to see her smile. I like t' think that she loved me too." His eyes lowered slightly. Well, maybe she had once. But it wasn't her fault for leaving. She'd told him why she'd left, and now she was gone.
"I feel like that about Cedarclan now though. I wanna protect all the cats here 's best I can. Feel like I got reasons to get better."
He was already making plenty of friends. He had Ravenface, and even if the plants she had him pick up tasted bad, he liked that someone trusted him enough to take him with her on such an important job. He had Dapplepaw, who was just as sweet as can be. His first apprentice! He liked to think that he had Bramblenose, and lots of other warriors who he went on patrols with. He had Starlingfur, who always helped him no matter how busy he was. And now, he liked to think, he had Birchtail. Specklefoot turned towards the older tom with a slightly more genuine smile. "I think I'd like that though. I mean, not many she-cats in Cedarclan. But it'd be awful nice to have a family some day." he looked towards the nursery, now. He could hear the kits playing inside. Little patches of grey and white or tabby fur popping by the entrance occasionally. There were so many kits in Cedarclan. Specklefoot just loved playing with them. Especially Starlingfur's! With her bein so busy an all, it was all the warriors in the clan's jobs to take care a' those little kits. No- they were all a big family! It was everyone's job to take care of all of the kits! Still..
"It'd be real nice to have kits, too. Don' know what good a Pa I'd be, but I sure would try." he smiled. He loved watching Swanstrike help the queens. He wondered if he could do something like that, someday. But he liked being a warrior too. And maybe the queens wouldn't take too nice t' havin a tom in their den. That almost made him laugh a bit. "Your kits 're so good, Birchtail." he saw Hawkkit stick his head out of the den. Specklefoot waved, and the little tom ducked back in with a grin. "My Pa only ever had time to pay 'tention t' one. How do you do you an' miss Starlinfur do so good with four?"

Birchtail purred a bit comfortingly. His eyes looked over towards the nursery now and he watched the kits accidentally roll out of the den and run back in. Some with smiles and others with annoyance. He smiled lightly as he listened to Specklefoot speak.
"Not many she-cats, not. Rookshadow. Swanstrike. Sweetfang. I would say Ravenface, but she's a medicine cat and that's against the code. And its hard being a father of four. With one being sick too, and to tie it all in with warrior and leader duties. But its good when there is family. Fernheart is my sister and our kits are the same age, so she is a big help. So is Swanstrike."
He looked over at Specklefoot now. "Is there any she-cat you like in particular? A she-cat that just gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling?" he asked. Maybe if Specklefoot just said it outloud, he would be able to realize that he like one of the she-cats here.

Specklefoot nodded. There really weren't too many! Lotsa toms. That was okay though. Specklefoot had grown up mostly around toms, and he was used to it. The only she-cats he'd really known before coming to Cedarclan had been his Ma and Embry. There were more here, but most of em had mates? Still.. Birchtail's question.. Specklefoot tilted his head in thought. Well.. Sweetfang was sorta scary. They both had spots though, and he liked that. It was nice to see another cat with spots in the clan. It reminded him of his family. Which.. wasn't really somethin that you wanted in a mate, come to think of it! Well, not that Specklefoot had much experience in the whole 'mate' area anyways.
"Ravenface is against the code?" Specklefoot blinked. Boy did he have a lot to learn about this code. He was learning new things every day, and this was still new to him. What had Ravenface done that was wrong? Did being a medicine cat... make it so that you couldn't have kits? Oh, that would be awful sad. He would have to ask Ravenface about that later certainly. Maybe that was why his friend was so grumpy all the time!
"Hmmmm..." he tried to think. "Well, I like all the cats in Cedarclan. But she-cats.." Well.. He hadn't spoken with Rookshadow much. She seemed awfully nice though. And he loved playing with Poolkit- uh, Poolpaw now- and the other kits. Swanstrike was just about the biggest cat he'd ever seen. Well.. Before Sweetfang had come to the clan. Now she was the second biggest! She was so sweet and kind.. And she'd helped with his training once too! But he wasn't quite so sure about that. Maybe he should talk to her more. He loved the nursery, and he admired her for taking care of the kits how she did. Maybe he could help!
Still, no fuzzy feelings at any of them. "Well.. I'm not real sure!" he finally meowed. Wait a second.. "Well, other than Miss Starlinfur. But who wouldn't like her?" he laughed, looking over at the she-cat who now seemed to be saying something to Shadowfrost. Yeah... Golly was she pretty. And such a hard worker. So fair and kind with the Cedarclan warriors, and so expressive with those beautiful sunny eyes. Specklefoot couldn't help but smile.

Birchtail let the tom think about it. It was something to think about sometimes. Especially at such a young age. For Starclan's sake, he had to think about it. When he first realized that he had feelings for Starlingfur, he hadn't believed it. He passed it off as her just being nice to him. But then when he actually sat down and thought about it, he had realized that she was always on his mind. That she was always the one he went to when he wanted to go on a walk. That she was the first cat he wanted to see and talk to in the mornings. Sometimes you just don't know your feelings for someone until you thought about it.
Specklefoot's comment caught Birchtail off guard, though. He felt a sharp pain in his chest and it caused his head to snap towards the young cat. He stared at him through narrowed green eyes now. His tail flicked back and forth with annoyance.
"Starlingfur? Why Starlingfur?" he asked.

"Well, lotsa reasons! If you love her so much, you probably already know em all though." he purred obliviously, curling his tail. What good warrior wouldn't love their leader? "She's real strong, even when she don't have to be. An' she takes care of everyone in Cedarclan like they're her family." he meowed, looking out at her. Was she setting up patrols? There was such a quiet light in her eye as she worked. It just warmed Specklefoot's heart to know that their clan was in such good paws. He'd really made the right choice in joining Cedarclan. "Even when cats take a lil time to learn stuff, she helps. An she's always lookin for new ways to help too! I seen her, stayin up all night to patch the dens, and goin to talk to Ravenface during the day. Boy, she's just so busy all the time. I don't know how she even does it. " the tom shook his head. He'd be passed out if he worked half as hard as she did! For half the time! And Specklefoot liked to think that he worked real hard.
"I see how she looks at you, and how she looks at you two's kits. She really loves you. An its not fake neither!" his lichen green eyes were serene and warm now as he smiled at Birchtail. "She's such a good Mama, and an even better leader. We're real lucky to have a leader like her. And you're real lucky to have her as a mate! Why, if I had a mate like miss Starlinfur..." he looked into the distance, a grin spreading across his face before he shook his head. "I'd be just about the happiest cat in the world."

Birchtail lashed his tail back and forth as he listened to Specklefoot woo over Starlingfur. Why had he done this to himself? Why had he even asked why Starlingfur was the cat Specklefoot liked. He shouldn't have asked. He didn't want to know. And yet, he did at the same time. He wanted to know everything that Specklefoot thought about his mate. And it was all one huge mistake to know.
His claws unsheathed as he realized that Starlingfur and Specklefoot had spent alone time together. He wasn't angry at her. He could never be angry at Starlingfur. She was just trying to be helpful. He trusted her. But with the way this tom spoke of her, he didn't trust him. What if Specklefoot tried to do something? What if he tried to take Starlingfur away from Birchtail.
That thought did it. He reacted without even realizing what he was doing. Within a moment, his claws were digging into the young tom's shoulders and he had him pinned to the ground. Dust had flown up around them, causing a small dust cloud. He had shoved him to the ground that hard and a small indention into the ground showed that he had slammed him a few times against it. No doubt, probably dazing the spotted cat.
He was speechless. He couldn't say anything. He was just so angry, so protective, so jealous. Jealous that Starlingfur had caught another tom's attention. Angry that Specklefoot stared at Starlingfur as if she could cure even the sickest cat with just a touch of her paw.
"Stop looking at her. Stop smiling at her. Just stop. She isn't yours and she will never be yours."
He had his hind claws digging into Specklefoot's belly now. He could feel blood welling up from the spotted feline's wounds, although he didn't even have a second thought about this. He probably didn't even realize what he was doing.

One second Specklefoot was sitting there, talking to his new friend and clanmate about romance and clan life. And the next, he was flat on his back with claws in his shoulders. And then he was being pounded, pounded, pounded against the ground. Specklefoot writhed and yelped, dizzied and confused by the sudden attack. There was dust in his eyes, and he couldn't see. What was going on?! What was happening!? Specklefoot tried to scramble away- it had all happened so quickly, he was barely aware of his attacker until he was pressed down into the earth. Claws were in his belly, and Oh STARCLAN THAT HURT. Specklefoot let out a wail, paws on his eyes and hind legs kicking wildly.
"I CAN'T SEE! I CAN'T SEE!" he cried. He could hear pawsteps all around, and he could hear Birchtail's voice. Was he the one? Was he attacking him? Why? WHY?! What had he done? Had Specklefoot done something wrong again? Oh Starclan he didn't know! Why was he always doing things wrong?! "I c-c-can't see anything! I don't know what you're talking about!" he whimpered, trying in vain to scramble away. But he was pinned, and there were claws in his shoulders. He could feel the wet hot of blood at his belly. At his shoulders. And his eyes burned like fire.
"BIRCHTAIL. SPECKLEFOOT. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS." Her thundering voice stopped Specklefoot in his tracks. Specklefoot.. had never heard Starlingfur yell like that. But he recognized it in an instant. Green eyes were wide and sightless, but they shipped from side to side in an attempt to find out where she was. Was she angry too? What had he done wrong? What had he done now?! Specklefoot wanted to curl up. He wanted to cower. He wanted to protect his stomach and his shoulders and all of the soft parts of his body. But with Birchtail on top of him- he assumed- he couldn't do that. Until the weight was lifted. And then Starlingfur's scent was everywhere."What is going on here?" she snapped, and her voice was hard. Quieter, but hard. He heard pawsteps, and scented cats surrounding them. He could feel one paw on his chest- smaller than Birchtail's now. Gentler. Where was Birchtail, though? Specklefoot whipped his head around, but saw nothing. "I-I-I'm sorry miss St-Starlinfur.. I'm sorry Birchtail..." he whimpered, pulling his hind legs in on himself. He rolled onto his side and tucked his head beneath his front paws. The foreign paw was lifted from his chest, and he curled the rest of his limbs together. The blood was sticky on his belly, and it stung. "I d-didn't mean to make no-one mad.." The mood had changed so quickly. He barely knew what was going on. Why was Birchtail mad at him? What had he done? He would fix it, whatever it was! He just didn't want to get hurt anymore! Birchtail froze as Starlingfur yelled. He didn't move to hurt Specklefoot any more. Nor did he move off of the tom just quiet yet. He just glared down at him and he heard the rushing of paws as others came over to watch. He didn't look to see who was there. Not until Starlingfur was right next to him. And suddenly, he was yanked right off of Specklefoot.
He fell onto his back and looked to see who had pulled him off. Cavernstorm had a massive paw placed on Birchtail's chest, holding him still, just in case he tried to get back up.
Birchtail's tail lashed back and forth and his eyes were filled with jealousy. Jealousy that Starlingfur went to Specklefoot first instead of him. And then Specklefoot spoke. He sounded so hurt. So innocent and confused. And betrayed.
It caused Birchtail to stop. To think about what had occurred. And to realize that he had screwed up big time. He looked over at the cat, to see him curled up in a ball. He was trying to protect himself. To protect himself from Birchtail.
No. No. This was never supposed to happen. This wasn't Birchtail. He closed his eyes and just laid on his back, pinned. He couldn't believe he had done that. He had attacked a clan mate. He had attacked possibly the nicest cat in the clan. And Specklefoot wasn't even mad about it. He was hurt, physically and emotionally now.
"No, Specklefoot, don't be sorry. It was my fault. Something came over me. I got jealous. I'm sorry. I didn't mean for any of that to happen," he said. His voice shook now as he calmed himself down. Or tried to. His mind was all over the place now.
His eyes opened and he saw Rookshadow staring at him now. He saw the look of horror in her eyes, her claws unsheathed and her standing defensively in front of Poolpaw. He could only imagine what she saw in him. He probably looked like her father. The gray and white fur. The anger. The way he just suddenly snapped and harmed someone.
Did she believe he was turning into Crowstar? Was he turning into Crowstar?

When you get to the end of your rope, Tie a knot and hang on.
Starlingfur's eyes were hard as she hovered over Specklefoot. The spotted tom was curled in upon himself, hiccupping with tears dribbling from red eyes. She could see blood on his shoulders. Despite his curled position, she could see red welling on his stomach. And there were tufts of fur between Birchtail's claws. It was a sad sight. An angering site. Starclan, could Starlingfur leave nobody in this clan alone for a day? She could feel her fuse shortening. The stress mounting on her back. What had Birchtail done to this tom? Why?!
When Birchtail spoke, Specklefoot didn't respond. He just continued that quiet sniffling. Starlingfur stared at Birchtail, eyes distant and rough as she shook her head. This was so... unlike him. Birchtail would be the last cat she would think to attack someone- let alone a clanmate. Let alone in the middle of camp. What was going on here? One moment, she'd been giving orders for a hunting patrol. And the next, screaming. When she'd turned around, she'd found this. Starclan, why? Why did this have to happen?. There was almost.. distrust in her eyes as she stepped over Specklefoot and towards Birchtail.
They had kits. They had a clan. She was the leader, for Starclan's sake. The impending Leaf-Bare had everyone's nerves strained, but this? What kind of thing would urge a cat to do something like this? Now of all times! Starlingfur's eyes were a whirlwind of emotion as she looked down at Birchtail, now restrained by Cavernstorm. He was apologizing. His voice shook. His green eyes wavered. She could see the fear- the guilt- the regret in his green eyes as he lay in the dust. Copper eyes were forlorn as they met his. "Birchtail.... why?" she breathed, voice.. hurt. Wounded, even. Memories flashed through her eyes like lightning. Why would he do this? Why, after all they'd built? Why must the past repeat itself? He had promised he would be different, he had promised he would be different, he had promised that he wouldn't be like him.
She'd... Starclan, she'd trusted him. She loved him. She loved him with all of her heart. For seasons they'd been together. Wasn't he kind? Wasn't he honest? Wasn't he gentle? Birchtail was a good cat. They'd been together through so much... And now.... had he...? What would drive him to do something like this? She couldn't wrap her mind around it. Her brain wouldn't work. Like the cogs were stuck. She was so tired. It showed in her eyes. In her pelt. Everyone here was tired. Everyone here was weak. Everyone here was anxious. The last thing they needed.. Was to be attacking one another. The last thing she needed was for her mate to be attacking other cats. Never again. Starlingfur had thought that she would never have to deal with this again. Starlingfur had hoped that once the kits were born and the clan formed, that things would be okay. That life would finally be alright. That all of them could live together in peace, putting the pain and suffering of their past lives behind them. Starlingfur had hoped, yes.

Birchtail shook his head. He could hear it. Her hurt. He hadn't wanted to hurt her. He hadn't known that this would hurt her. He hadn't know this would even happen. But it did. And now he not only harmed Specklefoot, but his family as well.
He was finally allowed to get up, although he didn't move much. He rolled over so that he was no longer on his back. He looked up at Starlingfur, green meeting copper. Hurt reflected in both. His mouth hung open, but no words came out. He tried to speak. No sound.
He closed his mouth and looked over at Specklefoot. He stared at him for a moment, but not with the jealousy or anger he had a few moments ago. He stared at him with sorrow. The tom didn't look at him and Birchtail didn't blame him. He could only imagine what Specklefoot was thinking.
Birchtail was known for being friendly. And in the past quarter moon, he had nearly attacked one cat and then literally attacked another. It had to be his blood. He couldn't escape it. His family's curse. His family wasn't allowed to be happy. Any cat could tell that. Even his kits had been affected already.
Rookshadow. Everything had been taken away from her.
Fernheart. Everyone who had been in the clans before knew what happened to her.
Crowstar. He had gone mad and become a dictator for the clan.
Shrikestar. A tom who lost so much.
Flickerkit. She may not even make it to become an apprentice. And if she did, she may never get the chance to become an apprentice.
It had only been a matter of time before it was his turn. It was finally here. Nobody in his family was meant to be happy. Starclan would see to that.
"No matter what I tell you, it wouldn't be a good enough reason for why I did this to him. But I can tell you that it was a mistake. I never meant for it to happen."
