Are you happy?
The thought came to him in the middle of the night like a lightning strike through a dark sky. it was instant, short and wherever it struck left an impact not soon forgotten. Soft blue eyes opened in the dark den. It was early night and Boltfang was the last one in the den. He hadn't been assigned to any morning patrols, though he was pretty sure he had to hunt around moonhigh. He stiffened as he began to slowly mull around in his nest. His joints felt older than they were in the morning, but after he got moving like everyone else, he was still a relatively decent cat to have by your side. His muscles were still strong, he could still keep up with the average warrior, and when he really tried, he could usually impress others. It wasn't a hard feet after all, being a cat who looked like he just walked into the den through a storm. Scars littered his flanks and underside. And his fur was pretty ragged, but he was doing alright. After he had fully come to the realization that he was awake, he began to stand up and stretch, making his way out of the den shortly afterwards. He quickly scanned the camp, Cats were busy and going about their business as the usual, and Boltfang was another cat part of the now well underway Cederclan.
But that thought lingered in the back of his head. Are you happy? Boltfang wasn't even sure where the thought itself came from. His eyes were glazed over with a haze of sleep. He picked up his pace to a slow walk and made his way to the nursery, poking his head in to see his mate and kits asleep near the back. One black and white shecat, with two little kits tucked into her belly. Each one had the slow gentle rise and fall of breathing in sleep. Boltfang's eyes softened as he watched his family. His kits, he would do anything for. But it wasn't always like this. Boltfang had a history with kits that even he was unaware of. His family had always been in either some type of danger, usually because he was too reckless to think anything through before he acted. Boltfang had changed throughout his life, once a proud and overconfident young Tom in his days of Duskclan, to an older, nervous shell of what he once was, without any memory of the space in between. But as much as that should bother a cat, Boltfang has learned to deal with it.
Are you happy?
Boltfang's eyes lite up with happiness though. His kits started to wake up and mew for food, and before he could be seen he pulled his head out of the nursery and made his way over to the fresh kill pile. He poked around for a nice sized mouse and a smaller one for himself. Fernheart was probably going to be hungry when she woke up. The night air was cool and a small breeze blew through the camp blowing Boltfang's fur gently to the side as he pawed over the fresh kill pile. Boltfang frowned slightly as he didn't find a decent enough mouse.
Fernheart would enjoy something freshly killed more anyway.
With a quick turn Boltfang rushed off and out the entrance of the camp into the wild forest for some food. Making his way up one of the trees and along the tree branches, his eyes darted along the forest, seeing if he could find something his mate would enjoy waking up too. His eyes finally fell upon a squirrel, perched in the tree branches. Odd enough site as it was, Boltfang didn't think Squirrels were nocturnal creatures. Is it worth it? Yes, yes it is. Boltfang made his way to the lower branch where the squirrel had made the worst choice of view spots of it's life. Boltfang reached out and swiped at the squirrel!
it happened to fast Boltfang didn't have time to react. An owl screeched as it swooped down from the upper branches, talons at the ready and grabbed at the squirrel, knocking into the cat sitting right next to said squirrel. Boltfang dug his claws into the tree branch as he slid off holding on just barely as the squirrel fell and the owl fell after it.
Are you happy?
Boltfang quickly scrambled back onto the branch and made his way down to the forest floor. With a small sigh he began sniffing out something else to eat. Back to square one. Boltfang made his way back towards the camp at a slower pace, deciding to grab every mouse and vole he could get his paws on. Having a nice little collection of six when he finally did return to camp, Not being able to carry every bit at once he picked up as much as he could and carried it a short distance before going back for the next and so on. It had been quite some time since he had gone out, when he returned the moon was already approaching it's highest point. Quickly making his way to the fresh kill pile he dropped off his catch and carried two mice to the nursery as quickly as he could, he poked his head in and made his way back to the cat he had gone out for in the first place, setting the bigger mouse in front of her and dropping his at his feet.
"Hungry?"
Are you happy?
A small smile crossed Boltfang's face as that question that had been bugging him all morning struck once more. Despite whatever he went through, and whatever he had coming his way, Boltfang knew the answer.
Yeah... yeah I am....
